Yep… I’m a Geek!

There are several sites out there that specialize in overcharging for geek themed t-shirts and accessories (Think Geek, J!NX and Syswear.com to name a few). But today I stumbled across Nerdy Shirts and found my new favorite design (shown at right).

Back when I was at the top of my game, I could resuscitate any dead cart with my patented “Breath of Life”. I was something of a local legend.

Ahhh the memories….

Totally Pwned! (Bring It! Edition)

For those of you who don’t know, Ken Kutaragi is currently the insane head of the Sony Computer Entertainment gaming division. Mr. Kutaragi is often referred to as “The Father of the PlayStation”. But lately Ken has also been referred to as “The Father of Nutty Marketing Statements and Vicious Microsoft Slander”. Some of his statements have caused some concern that he might actually be going a tad senile. For instance…

“We want for consumers to think to themselves ‘I will work more hours to buy one (PS3)’. We want people to feel that they want it, irrespective of anything else…”

Does “anything else” include food, clothing and shelter? Based on some of the eBay bids over the last couple weeks that point could definitely be argued to the affirmative. But the point of my post is that even for all of Mr. Kutaragi’s insane smack talk, the PS3 just doesn’t seem to be quite what he hyped it up to be. It seems that many folks just aren’t that impressed. Take the guys over at 1Up for instance. They seem to think the PS3 really isn’t that much better than the Xbox 360, despite being more than $200 more expensive. So… what basis do they have for this rediculous claim? The videos HERE pretty much sum it up… (note the split screen comparison between consoles)

I’ve only included one of the 10 or so videos they have posted at 1Up, but personally I think the 360 actually looks a little better. If nothing else, it seems like the 360 does a better job at HDR lighting. These videos might actually be enough to sway my purchase if I happened to be in the market for a next-gen console (which I’m not, based on my utter lack of cash). If I had to make my decision based solely on these videos (and the fact that I don’t give a rats ass about Blu-Ray) I think I’d be inclined to save a couple hundred bucks and buy a 360. Ultimately this is all irrelevant though. My money (when I can finally scrape it together) is going towards a Wii.

Who’s Really Winning?

I found this nifty page today and thought it would be fun to keep track of console sales through the holidays. Who are you rooting for?

Initial Wii Impressions

Unfortunately, I’m too broke to buy a Wii this Christmas. Try as I might to convince my wife, she seems to think buying clothes for the kids is more important than buying a Wii. Go figure…

My brother, however, is single and therefore not too broke to buy one. And this week, I got to play with my brothers Wii (I tried not to make that joke, but it’s just too darned hard). After all the hype and build up I wasn’t sure if it would be able to live up to my expectations. But after spending more than an hour with his shiny white box of wonderment, I think I’m sold. I got to try Wii Sports, Excite Truck and Zelda: Twilight Princess and I was pretty impressed with all three.

Bikini Case Mod…

It may be rather stereotypical, but I do enjoy a good anime. Granted, there is a lot of garbage anime out there, but there’s also a lot of really good anime (pretty much anything by Hayao Miyazaki). And although most of what I prefer to watch doesn’t contain any idol-esque bimbo chicks that you might expect to see featured in Dead or Alive Xtreme Beach Volleyball, there is a plethera of anime out there that does contain characters of that nature. Those Japanese sure do love their cartoon women.

Case in point… The Bikini Idol Case Mod (hit the link for lots more pics)

The linked site is in Japanese so I’m not really sure if this case is supposed to represent a specific character or if it’s just supposed to be repesentative of the genre in general, but either way, someone went to a lot of effort to build this. I could make some joke about how lonely he must be, but I bet he gets all sorts of attention at lan parties. And I gotta give props for the determination and skill required to actually build it. If only I had either of those characteristics… oh well.

New PSP Firmware 3.0

Well, the new PSP firmware is out.  Actually, the current build is 3.01, but let’s not get crazy yet.  It looks like most of the work on this is devoted to helping your PSP get carnal with your newly stolen/overpaid/broken PS3, but if you’re not doing the whole homebrew thing, it’s a pretty compelling upgrade.  Along with some new media features and options, it seems to have made web browsing a little smoother as well.  Complete details here.

First, if you’re a dork for music visualizations, that’s a new feature.  Also added is a feature to stop your UMDs from auto-loading, which is a nice option.  Support for downloaded games is now there, but again, you’ll need a PS3 to get that going.  For now, none of the 11 people who have PS3s are friends of mine, so I’ll have to wait to report on how that works.  The list of titles to date isn’t terribly compelling yet, and it’s not clear if it’s even really working.  We’ll have to wait until the dust settles to find out, I think.

Totally Pwned: More Hot PS3 Pwnage

You probably heard about the dude who won 3 PS1 consoles for $900 on eBay.  Well, with a little fuzzy math, here’s another awesome eBay deal posted up on engadget.

What a fun time console launch season is!  Props to all the creative folks out there, especially those unafraid to mod with duct tape.

I Almost Peed My Pants…

Every now and then as you wander aimlessly across the void of the interweb, you stumble on true internet goodness. There are lots of things out there that are supposed to be funny, but some of the posts on the Game Anagrams thread over on the Something Awful forums (both links are potentially nsfw) are freakin hillarious. The basic point of the thread is to come up with alternative game titles using the letters in the current title and then create a new box for the game using the new name. Some of these are brilliant.

The following image is just a taste of what you’ll find there, but it’s definitely one of my favorites:

How does the old addage go?

If it seems too good to be true…

Unfortunately for some folks, it takes a few classes down at the school of hard knocks before they really get a firm grasp on how things work in the “real world”. Take, for example, the poor eBayer who apparently thought he was getting a steal on a Playstation 3 (or several of them, depending on how he read, or didn’t read the description). In the defense of the moron buyer, the eBay Listing is a bit dodgy. The seller uses phrases such as “Not PRE-ORDERED” and “THERE IS NOWHERE TO FIND EVEN THE 20GB SYSTEMS THIS CHEAP”. Obviously these keywords were meant to grab the attention of buyers looking for actual PS3′s. Even so, it’s pretty clear that this listing is not for a Playstation 3.

Let’s just hope this guys gets many good years of solid Playstation ONE enjoyment out of his newly aquired consoles. After all, he just dumped $900 into hardware that’s really only worth about $200 or so. Actually… if you really think about it, he probably shouldn’t feel much worse than those that just paid $1500 for an actual PS3. From the general reaction of those who were able to get their hands on one, this guy is probably better off.

Final Fantasy: Advent Children Is Amazing!

Honestly, I’ve never played a Final Fantasy game. Ever. I admit that I’ve been mildly intrigued from time to time regarding the hype that seems to follow this series, but I’m mainly a PC gamer. I’ve actually never owned a console on which to play these games (except for my NES, but I never played the first one). Not to mention the fact that I’m not huge on turn based games. I tend to get bored rather quickly by having to take a break between each attack to figure out what to do next. Maybe too many years of Counter-Strike has turned me into an action junky.

Despite having never played the games, I do own Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within though. The first time I watched this movie I was blown away at what Square/Enix was able to accomplish. The CG was amazing and the story was easily able to stand on its own for those unfamiliar with the games. To be honest, I don’t know if this movie even really ties in with the games, but as an Anime fan, I found it quite enjoyable.

Which brings us to the point of this post… This weekend I finaly rented Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children. Frankly, the only reason I rented it was because of the sheer lack of anything interesting at Hollywood Video on Friday night. Plus the fact that my wife wasn’t with me to pick something. Her general distaste towards movies of the anime/kung-fu/CG/sci-fi/fantasy/gaming persuasions usually wins out, but without her there to dissuade me, I got it. After watching it I have only two words… HOLY WOW!!!
