PSP Faceplate Mod

I’ve never been one to live in fear of voiding my warranty, so when I heard about a way to potentially destroy my PSP, I was all ears.  The result is visible in the picture.  I got sick of wiping off fingerprints, so I picked up a flat black faceplate from DecalGirl.  To add a little spice, I got the yellow button kit as well.  Let me tell you – it took some fiddling.  I lost a couple of those tiny screws, but thanks to a wicked powerful magnet I found on eBay, I was able to suck them back out of my carpet.  After some manipulation, I got the buttons just about right once more, and it does look unique.  For most folks, I can’t really recommend this mod.  I probably wouldn’t do it again myself.  The flat black is excellent, however, and it’s worth a look to modders and nerds in general.

Ben “Hack” Strikes Again!

Ben “Hack” Heckendorn is by far one of the most 1337 “geeks” to grace the face of planet earth. And he has returned, yet again, to provide us with another peice of portable hardware lusciousness. Behold the Wii laptop:

Bikini Case Mod…

It may be rather stereotypical, but I do enjoy a good anime. Granted, there is a lot of garbage anime out there, but there’s also a lot of really good anime (pretty much anything by Hayao Miyazaki). And although most of what I prefer to watch doesn’t contain any idol-esque bimbo chicks that you might expect to see featured in Dead or Alive Xtreme Beach Volleyball, there is a plethera of anime out there that does contain characters of that nature. Those Japanese sure do love their cartoon women.

Case in point… The Bikini Idol Case Mod (hit the link for lots more pics)

The linked site is in Japanese so I’m not really sure if this case is supposed to represent a specific character or if it’s just supposed to be repesentative of the genre in general, but either way, someone went to a lot of effort to build this. I could make some joke about how lonely he must be, but I bet he gets all sorts of attention at lan parties. And I gotta give props for the determination and skill required to actually build it. If only I had either of those characteristics… oh well.

Solid Wood Computing

Well, here’s a worthy mod.  I spotted this on engadget today.  Being that we originally started as a modding site, this is a throwback to some of our earliest posting days.  These things are pricey; the one I was checking out would set you back about $6300.  Sad thing is, your grandpa could probably have made one in his garage in an afternoon.  I lack both the equipment and the know-how to make fine wood crafts (though I did build some wicked-useful shelves for my wife in the pantry).

New fans in the old system

Well, I mucked up the pictures, but I did a little work on the old system today. I moved the main tower into the bedroom (that’s my silver Lian Li case). While trying to sleep, I realized the thing is actually a little noisy with the fans I had in it. Well, I replaced my case fans with these Arctic Cooling 80x38mm fans from SVC, and I replaced my stock CPU cooler with this Silent Whisper cooler by Sunbeam. For as cheap as these things were, WOW, it’s a lot quieter. I think one of the keys is the isolation on the case fans. Now the loudest thing in there is the chipset cooler (I really hate those things), so that’s the next adjustment.

Oh, not only is the noise down, but I’m about 4 degrees C cooler than I was stock. So far so good for a $20 CPU cooler.

You Got A Permit For That Thing?

In our ongoing search for the sickest case mods on the planet, Zach stumbled across this fine piece of fabricated genious.

As a teenager, my mom often accused me of housing a nuclear waste dump in my room… oh how I wish I had had something like this back then to confirm her suspisions. It would have been an excellent addition to my toxic hazard of an excuse for a bedroom.

Props definitely go out the artist who was actually able to convince a few parts manufacturers to build custom gear for his box. And although this may not be as artistically stunning as the Doom III box I’d love to show up to a lan party with this bad boy ticking down till ‘launch’.

The, um… Anti-Case Mod (Thermaltake mini-fridge)

When we think of case mods, we generally think of some geek trying to make his (or her) gaming rig look like anything but the standard Dell pc. Well, in our search for cool mods, we happened to come across this anti-case mod. Instead of trying to make a computer look like something else, this intrepid geek decided to make something else look like a gaming rig. In this case, a fridge.

Behold the Thermaltake Mini-fridge!

Inventgeek.com provides more pictures and fairly complete instructions for any other daring modders out there. I imagine this is one mod that will have a high adoption rate, because as we all know… you’ve gotta have some way of keeping all that caffeine cold for those all night Counter-Strike sessions.

Check it out here!

All Hail King Bender!

So here’s another case of geeky cartoon nerds with too much time on their hands. Oh how I worship their creative waste of time.

You can review the full build log at Mini-ITX.com or by clicking the pic of Bender below:

We’re pinned! Send reinforcements NOW!!!

What can I say? This case just rocks! Unfortunately the site is in Italian so I didn’t really get anything out of the post other than the title: “Radiostation, mod fenomenale!”, and the machine specs. But really, the pictures are worth a thousand words. Feast your eyes on this Wolfenstein mod that would probably send most vets into a fit of post traumatic stress induced histeria. Just WOW!

The Sangaku (Japanese) Case Mod

This is one smooth lookin case. Another from the “I’d display that in the front room” group of case mods. You can check out more pics of the box as well their excellent 3DMark ’05 score by clicking below:
