Initial Wii Impressions

Unfortunately, I’m too broke to buy a Wii this Christmas. Try as I might to convince my wife, she seems to think buying clothes for the kids is more important than buying a Wii. Go figure…

My brother, however, is single and therefore not too broke to buy one. And this week, I got to play with my brothers Wii (I tried not to make that joke, but it’s just too darned hard). After all the hype and build up I wasn’t sure if it would be able to live up to my expectations. But after spending more than an hour with his shiny white box of wonderment, I think I’m sold. I got to try Wii Sports, Excite Truck and Zelda: Twilight Princess and I was pretty impressed with all three.

Wii’s Far Cry… Look At All Those Trii’s

I’ll admit that I haven’t seen the Wii or PS3 in the flesh yet. However, I have seen plenty of game footage from both and to be honest, I’m pleasantly surprised with the Wii. There’s no doubt that the Wii is in third place when it comes to graphical realism, but from what I’ve seen so far, I really don’t think that’s going to detract from the overall enjoyment of this system (hell… I still love to play Sub Hunt on my Intellevision and there aint no HDMI adapter for that system either).

Case in point… I just found the following video of Far Cry for the Wii. I played the original a bit and although it’s hard to tell from this small clip, I think Far Cry: Vengeance looks pretty friggen good:

What are your thoughts?

Metroid By BitFlicks

The guys over at BitFlicks have created yet another sweet lego-mation video of one of the all time NES greats. This week Samus Aran gets a lego makeover as she blasts her way through the underworld of Planet Zebes. I’ve embedded the clip below, but you’ll have to head on over to BitFlicks to see the full size vid.

A Real Nintendo Revolution…

At some point everyone has to come to terms with who they really are deep down.

Personally, I’m a nintendo fan. Don’t take this the wrong way, I love my PC and I’ve even been known to play an XBox or (gulp…) Playstation now and then. But deep down, I remember my roots and I can’t deny it’s a part of me.

I got my first NES when I was about 8 and I remember many days of my youth spent basking in the soft glow of my parents giant wood-encased RCA console TV. The Tecmo Bowl theme song blaring on the crappy TV speakers. My ultimate goal… to win the Tecmo Bowl while not allowing a single point scored against me (only did that a couple times). On other days it might be to beat Contra WITHOUT the 30 guy code. Or maybe to visit -1 world in Super Mario Bros. Ahhh… the good old days.

Anyway, the point of this post is a fun new site I found that provides a way to relive all the NES glory days from the comfort of your Firefox browser. VNES is a nifty little site that has over 300 NES games available to play through a Java browser plugin. I’ve used a few emulators that have worked quite well, but this is a great alternative for those unable to install an emulator or download roms (read “work”, “school” or “library computers”). So click on through and get your old skool Nintendo on.

E3 Insanity! Is The Wii For Real?

Its that special time of year again when gaming geeks can travel to the mecca of the gaming world that is E3. We ModStompers would give just about anything to be there, but unfortunately we have jobs in the ‘real-world’ that require our attention. Maybe next year though.

Our non-attendance aside, and with the 3 major keynotes still hanging in the smoggy air of LA, we thought we’d share our thoughts on the whole ‘Who will win?’ question.

Since We’re In A Retro Mood…

If any of our devoted readers (don’t worry… I realize you’re just a figment of my imagination) also frequent joystiq.com then you’ll have already seen this. If not, you should check it out. It seems Progressive Boink got their hands on an old World Of Nintendo gear catalogue and they’ve graciously posted the whole thing on their site.

They have taken a few ‘liberties’ with the picture captions and I must warn that some of the language could be viewed as suggestive and/or offensive, but it’s also quite humorous (like spray milk from your nose humorous). So if you’re looking for a quick trip down the Nintendo portion of memory lane, click the pic below. It holds special meaning to me because I ate my lunch from a box exactly like this one for more than half of my gradeschool career.
