Sucks To Be Sony…

According to several of those stock market smart guys you always hear tale of, Sony’s fiscal year revenue results may not be looking so hot. Apparently, they may post the biggest loss in 4 years equaling close to $630 million (that’s US dollars kids).

For the most part, the huge loss is due primarily to slow Playstation 3 sales (well, duh). The article specifically sites the fact that the poor PS3 is currently in the 3rd place position behind the Wii and Xbox360 and speculates that this is mostly due to insufficient production. It seems that the losses tallied by their games division will outweigh the profits from both the electronics and movie divisions combined. So all that money they just raked in from the record breaking box-office sales of Spidey 3 this month still weren’t enough to counter the PS3′s sluggish performance.

Now, you may argue that they new they weren’t going to make a profit on the PS3′s for several years. That’s just a calculated business decision. However, I don’t think the loss was supposed to be quite this vast. At least not judging by the reaction to this news. I guess we’ll just have to wait and see if the new management over there at the Sony games lair will be enough to pull this sucker out of one terribly frightening nose dive.

Do Australian Crickets Play PS3?

Because a soft and soothing chirping noise seems to be the only sound coming from the Australian PS3 launch lines. At least that’s what the following picture would suggest:

I don’t deny that I probably come across as a bit of a Sony hater, but lest you think it’s due to my devotion to some other gaming console, let me enlighten you. Over the years I’ve owned a good many Sony products, from calculators to car audio. And in all those years, I’ve come to find one thing in common with all those products… they’re crap (well, I guess the calculator was ok).

Let me explain a little further…

New PSP Firmware 3.0

Well, the new PSP firmware is out.  Actually, the current build is 3.01, but let’s not get crazy yet.  It looks like most of the work on this is devoted to helping your PSP get carnal with your newly stolen/overpaid/broken PS3, but if you’re not doing the whole homebrew thing, it’s a pretty compelling upgrade.  Along with some new media features and options, it seems to have made web browsing a little smoother as well.  Complete details here.

First, if you’re a dork for music visualizations, that’s a new feature.  Also added is a feature to stop your UMDs from auto-loading, which is a nice option.  Support for downloaded games is now there, but again, you’ll need a PS3 to get that going.  For now, none of the 11 people who have PS3s are friends of mine, so I’ll have to wait to report on how that works.  The list of titles to date isn’t terribly compelling yet, and it’s not clear if it’s even really working.  We’ll have to wait until the dust settles to find out, I think.

PLAYSTATION 3 Insanity…

I can’t help but wonder this week… at what point do you slip across that invisible border that divides reality from that other world most of us refer to as insanity? At what point are you so dependant on a piece of hardware that no amount of time or money is too much? At what point is your life so devoid of any real meaning that you’re willing to spend the next 9 days of your life camped out in front of Best Buy to try to get your grubby little mits on a PS3?

Maybe one of the guys in this pic could answer these questions for me:

More pics here

Apparently these campers reside in Burbank, CA and as we all know… Californians are nuts, right? Or maybe that’s just people from Hollywood… Regardless of where they live though, these people have quite obviously lost their grip on reality. I mean, how do they expect to pay for a PS3, games and all the necessary peripherals when they obviously don’t have jobs to worry about losing?

I guess that in order to understand them, I’d have to try to think like them. What piece of hardware would I be willing to stand in line for 9 days to obtain? Ummm… I guess I may never understand.

A True Guitar Hero…

For the last couple months, we’ve been a tad addicted to guitar hero here at ModStomp. Every friday evening we have a jam session at the ModStomp cave and try to grind each other into powder as we attempt some of the more difficult tracks on hard and expert. But even with as much practice as we’ve had lately, the video below puts us all to shame. The quality of the video isn’t that great, but the godlike guitar hero-ing of this supreme being is enough to melt your eyebrows.

I can only hope that I’ll someday be half the guitar hero this anonymous shredder has become. I bow to him.
