“God-Mode” in Guitar Hero

Ok… so Guitar Hero doesn’t technically have a “God-Mode” or “God” related difficulty level, but if it did… it would exist specifically for this guy. I bow to his utter Guitar Hero god-ness and plan to pray to him nightly as he sits upon his Fender made throne at the top of Mount Strat.

How Much Is Too Much?

So I just watched the latest gameplay trailer from the new game “The Darkness” and I have to admit that I found it a tad disturbing. Now, I want to preface the following comments by saying that I’m a huge first-person shooter fan. I’ve been playing fps games for over 10 years and I’ve played a wide variety of games in that time. Some of those games include the following (some of which may not technically be fps, but close enough):

Counter-Stike (all hail the headshot king)
Unreal Tournament
Goldeneye
Quake (all of em)
Doom (didn’t really like 3, but I played it a bit)
Max Payne (1 and 2)
Hitman (1 and 2)
Painkiller

And the list goes on. More than a few of those games could easily be considered pretty high on the violence-o-meter. However, in all the time I’ve spent playing them, I’ve never had quite the reaction I did to the latest clip of “The Darkness”. Hit the jump to watch the vid and get my thoughts.

Bioshock Looks Creepy

I just ran across this fun Bioshock clip conglomeration on YouTube. I must say that I’m pretty excited for this game, but it does look rather creepy. I’m all for a bit of spooky “tension” in my games, but hopefully it’s not so creepy that I can’t finish it. (Yeah… I’m a wuss. What of it?)

Anyway… enjoy the vid.

Positive Gaming Press

Hello all.  Just read a post about Adam Mapleson, the guy who took a bullet for a stranger to stop a robbery.  He’s in pretty bad shape, but he should be ok, fram what the reports are saying.  Props to Adam for having some guts, and our best wishes for a speedy recovery.

I’d like to toss out an official Modstomp policy, pending Rudeboy’s agreement, that we’ll post any press like this that shows gamers in a good light whenever we come across it.  Gamers are awesome people who do a lot of good in the world, and it’s time that everyone started noticing.

Flash Game Frenzy!

WARNING!!!: The following post will reduce your productivity by exactly 76.284%.

Generally speaking, I’m not huge on flash games. For the most part, if I want to play a casual game, I turn to my trusty DS. However, every now and then I come across a flash game that intrigues me and I bookmark it in case I want to play again some time. Over the past few weeks I’ve gathered up a few of these links and I thought I’d do my part to make you as unproductive as possible. As with most flash games, these won’t keep you entertained long, but they can be a nice diversion during a long work day. So without further ado… and in no particular order:

1. Our first flash adventure is called Spaceworms. This game bares very little resemblance to the worms game we’ve all come to know and love (or loathe), but at it’s heart, its still just directing a “worm”-ish thing around the screen. In this case, however, you’re trying to avoid asteroid type objects that seem to be gravitationally drawn to you. The learning curve isn’t too steep, but I promise that you’ll loose almost instantly the first 5 or 6 times you try it. I don’t want to give too much of a hint, but we’ll just call this the “Barry Sanders” game.

Valve Makes Me Giddy

I’ve been pretty excited for Half-Life 2: Episode 2 for a while now, but there’s a fresh write-up over at ShackNews about their recent opportunity to preview Valves next Freeman filled installment and I must say… my anticipation level is growing exponentially.

As you can see from the picture on the left, the physics have been updated a bit as well as the fact that much of this episode apparently takes place in the forested region surrounding City 17 (click the pic to visit the Shacknews gallery page). Valve was apparently very careful not to let much slip about the plot and developing story line, but the article is definitely worth a read if you’re a Half-Life fan.

Also, if that weren’t enough, we keep getting fed these little snippets of yummy footage from both Portal and Team Fortress 2. I haven’t been excited for a PC game for a while, but I’m definitely buying this triple-pack the day it arrives on shelves. Here’s an enlightening glimpse into the life of “Heavy Weapons Guy” for your pure viewing enjoyment.

DS Game Of The Week: Bust-A-Move DS

This weeks DS game of the week is a rather old title (as DS games go), but it’s still one that can suck up vast amounts of free time. For anyone who’s not really into puzzle games, just keep moving on to the next post. However, for anyone who can easily get sucked into a tetris marathon or who wastes away the hours at work playing bejeweled, Bust-A-Move is right up your alley.

To tell the truth, I’ve been a fan of Bust-A-Move ever since I first played it on a friends Sega Saturn “back in the day”. Even before that, I used to love a good session of Bubble Bobble on my old NES. My sister and I even spent an entire afternoon once and beat all 40 million levels (or however many there were) of that mind numbingly repetative game. Needless to say, those friendly little dragons hold a special place in my heart.

Crysis Makes Me Cry (With Joy)

It’s been a long time coming, but I think the virtual world is just about ready for permanent habitation. I’m not talking about some lame excuse for reality like 2nd Life or PSHome, but I’m pretty sure I could spend the rest of my days lounging around and sipping frosty beverages on the shores of the tropical paradise contained within Crytek’s latest gem Crysis. If you doubt, just take a gander at the footage below:

Click here for the HD version. (careful, it’s a large file)

Up to now, I haven’t felt too pressed to upgrade to Vista and a DX10 video card. However, that may change soon with the release of games like Crysis. My daughter will forgive me if I spend her college fund on a new gaming rig… right?

Here’s some fun gameplay footage as an added bonus.

Wet Roads Can Be Hazerdous (And Beautiful)

Holy freaking crud! Microsoft’s upcoming Project Gotham Racing 4 looks absolutely amazing! Apparently water effects are what really sets “next-gen” gaming apart from the last generation (as made explicitly clear in the image below).

When I first played the original PGR on a buddies XBox, I was blown away at how good it looked. The race replay was almost photo-realistic at times and I wondered then how it could get any better. Well, the picture above answers that question… add realistic weather (view the rest of the gallery here). Between PGR4, Bioshock, Lost Planet and a few others, it’s clear to see that weather is the wave of the future. And that’s ok by me. Now I just need to hijack my brother-in-laws 360 so I can play this game as soon as it comes out.

DS Game Of The Week: Touch Detective

I just want to start this post by saying that I’m pretty enamored with my fun new little dual-screened friend. My DS is the first hand held game machine I’ve owned since my original monochrome Gameboy and I gotta say… I’m in love. So I thought I’d start a new feature here on ModStomp called the “DS Game Of The Week”. I’m not sure if it’ll actually be weekly, but basically, I’ll just be sharing my thoughts on a different Nintendo DS game each week. I’ve got quite a few so far so I shouldn’t have to worry about running out of games to talk about any time soon. I’m not really planning to make this an official “review” type of feature, but more just my random thoughts about how I like each game and how playable it feels to me. Ya’know… mostly useless opinionated blather.

Anyway, for our first installment, I thought I’d share my thoughts on a fun little game I happened to accidentally stumble upon called Touch Detective. I figured I’d start with this one because you probably don’t need to hear any more about Mario Kart and Pokemon. It was a total accident that I happened to try this game, but I have to say that it’s much more enjoyable than I first thought it would be. The basic story line is that you’re a young girl named Mackenzie who has inherited the family detective business and you get to help her solve her first few cases. The gameplay is nothing extraordinary (it’s basically just a point-n-click style adventure game), but the combination of colorful anime-style graphics, decent character development and a fun humorous approach to the story makes this game surprisingly enjoyable.
