As with all these fun things, there are kernels of truth. Diablo does tend to drop Dol runes. "Trout" does have a root in Greek meaning "nibble" or "gnaw".
First, the hit points. Diablo in Normal Mode of Diablo 2 has 13818 hit points (according to the useful Diablo Wiki). So we can rule out that little piece of numerology.
Second, the error message. We need to see a screen shot of the error before we can really be confident. Otherwise, someone is just playing around with hex.
Third, the item. I’ve never encountered a "Gnaw Fold" ring in my play, and I can’t see a note of it in the item lists I’ve checked. Though I’m open to the idea, I don’t think it exists. The solution might be to install and not update, then play through single-player in an attempt to find it. . .maybe someone else has the time.
So, with no item, we can’t test the theory and get a screenshot. I call this a fun myth until someone can show me otherwise.

Yeah, I didn’t know about the hit points, but the real sticking point for me was verifying that the IF you killed Diablo AND you happened to be wearing the Gnaw Fold (the item that doesn’t actually exist anymore) AND he happened to drop a Dol Rune THEN the game would crash revealing the super-secret hex release date for Diablo 3 which the Blizzard team actually knew about at least 6 months ago (which is the last update I know about). Sounds like a stretch to me =)
Yes, quite a stretch! Although I love to know that people’s imaginations are still running everstrong!
Hey Zarch, if you read the theory again, its in Diablo 1 that Diablo has 8575 HP. NOT DIABLO 2.
i’m pretty sure you got trolled.
Gnaw Fold does not exist anymore. It is very rare and only existed before 1.07. Yes, the chance of Diablo dropping a Dol rune is miniscule, even in hell mode, I know. I’ve found Gnaw Fold before, but sold it before I knew it had any more significance. But as far as I know it’s not possible to acquire anymore. There is not much evidence to back this conspiracy up, but I guess no one will truly know ever again, except the ones who have experienced it.
i heard d3 will be released in 2011
